The scheme sought the conversion of a complex of redundant barns at Glebe Farm, Greatham into a single family dwelling which included a garage/workshop and oil tank.

Our brief from the client was to maximise lighting effects within the existing footprint of the buildings but respect the envelope and historic fabric. This exercise needed to sympathise with the landscape of the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The finished dwelling proves to be a respectful interpretation of the re-use of the more modern open part of the complex of buildings, retaining the single volume space through the careful and considered use of lightweight steel frame trusses which offer a ‘nod’ to the retained original oak frame. An oil-gilded copper leaf feature wall provides a modern intervention in a traditional material.
