Butter Market in Chichester

Butter Market, Chichester

Location:
Chichester, West Sussex
Client:
Orion Developments Ltd
Completed:
2011

This project involved the regeneration of John Nash’s Grade II* 1806 market building, which sits within the heart of Chichester’s commercial area. The 200 year old building had fallen into a poor state with low quality retail units and a dilapidated appearance.

MH Architects supported Orion Developments through the bidding process, working closely with commercial agents to define not only a visually stunning design solution, but also a commercially robust retail offer.</p>

One of the key objectives of the design was to provide a fully accessible building. This included improved access from street level as well as the insertion of a dramatic lift to enable access to the upper floor. MH Architects’ in-house Access Consultant informed this process, ensuring compliance with current legislation.

Construction was completed in 2011 and the project was consequently awarded ‘Best Commercial Development’ at the 2011 Sussex Heritage Awards, and more recently received the Chichester City Council Heritage Award.
